As a jazz vocalist I have had the opportunity to perform all across the United States, several times in Japan, in China, London, and the French West Indies. I started out singing in church, then in school presentations. I grew up singing along with recordings of Roberta Flack, Phoebe Snow, Chaka Kahn, Al Jarreau, and many others. As I matured, I began appreciating Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Betty Carter and Nina Simone. As I began to perform jazz throughout America and various parts of the world, I realized how wonderfully all of those artists influenced me. I also realized, through my travels, just how universal jazz is and how it permeates almost every existing culture.
